Letters from Iraq

Last week, Voices '04 received three Dear America letters from Iraq, and all at once. Although the letters have sparked interesting discussions, a few of our readers have raised doubts about their authenticity. The readers point out that Voices '04 had not received traffic from Iraq prior to these letters, and that the tone of the letters (at least two of them) seems suspiciously pro-invasion. You be the judge:

Anmar, Farmer in Iraq
"I poor man in Iraq. I know not why Saddam hated us but he kill many of friends and family I had just becuase we are Kurd. I never do anything to him. I not why he hurt us like he did. I don't know and don't care. I just know I am grateful that someone stop him. I am still very poor but at least I not dead. I wish i can say the same for my father and two brothers but can't. Everyday i sad for this but I thankful I still have mother. I can not say words thank you enough US for stop him."

Abdul Hamid, Accountant in Iraq
"Thank you America for comeing to Iraq and taking Saddam to prison. He is terrible man and he kills many people. My cousin is raped by his sons. Now I am not afraid to live here. Thanks you!"

Asawi Al-Abdar, Iraq
"My friends are being killed, maimed, and made to fight against their neighbours. At least under Saddam we knew we were Iraqis. Now we are told we are minorities and majorities, Sunni, Shiite, and Kurd. I cannot believe any more that these American soldiers and young men are signs of hope and of a future. I feel anger and I weep for my country. How can this continue?

If I was American I would tell my leader that his young boys and young soldiers must talk to the Iraqis and listen to the cries of the people they are here to protect. If I was American I would read the stories of my people, the Iraqi people, who are being torn apart because of this madness. How can an army save people they cannot understand and will not even listen to? If I was American I would vote with my heart and listen to the cries of these people dying every day just as my dreams of American hope are dying."

A touch of Canadian humour

Dear America,

Give your Canadian pals a break and stay home on election day. Because if you do, Bush will get in, there will be more wars, and Canada will once again welcome some of your best and brightest into our intellectual community. Canadians just love American intellectuals! I can't begin to tell you how much we appreciated staffing our university system with brilliant Ph.D.s from Harvard, Yale, and UCLA during the Vietnam war. Since the onset of the present Bush wars, we have recieved a whole new batch of great American thinkers. So, please don't vote and let us Canadians keep enjoying your country's brain-drain.

Your cooperation is much appreciated,
Diana Relke
Professor

Spanning the World for non-U.S., pro-Republican Voices

Americans for Bush, don’t believe the hype. The whole world is not against you. As the following letters from Voices '04 prove, you have several supporters outside of the U.S. who are counting on you to vote Republican! We’ll let them explain:

Andrew Lukaszewicz (Canada)
"I believe that Bush is the right person to lead the United States. He has demonstrated his ability to handle crises after 9/11. His domestic policies, such as banning late term abortions and trying to pass a law that would define marriage as the union between a man and a woman, have help to build a strong and moral society... Please make the right choice, and re-elect GWB. Although I am a Canadian, I am ashamed of my nation. I am an American at heart, and will soon live in this great land. God bless America!"

Andrew Dinham (Australia)
"Mr. Bush is a committed, hard-working president who has and is doing his darndest to rid the world of terrorists like Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein et.al. His decision to send troops to Iraq, was, unquestionably, a tough decision - but it was a tough decision made by a tough leader - a leader who was not willing to stand by and watch Saddam Hussein carry on his destruction any longer, a leader who instead of resorting to useless talk with a mindless dictator, sought to act and make the world a better place... So please, in summary, America, vote for President Bush. He is a strong leader, a leader willing to make a stand for the family unit and a leader willing to confront and deal with issues on the international front. God Bless America."

Joo Ik-Soon (South Korea)
"Though Bush has made some mistakes, he did many right things. For example, he brought America's economy up. Economy is the most important part, compared with others. I think a man who has experienced one time, will do the next time. Because he knows his faults, he will do carefully in politics next time... Of course, you must vote with your thinking. I hope you select the right person. Thank you."

Fredrico Santiago (Mexico)
"I want to let you know that not everyone hates Bush. I think Bush has done lots for your country, I think removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq was long overdue, it should have been done years ago. I am quite ashamed that my country has not helped you in Iraq. Mexico, the USA, and Canada are all north american countries and should help each other out in times of need. Hopefully relations between our countries were not hurt by Vicente Fox's decision not to help you. I hope you re-elect Bush in the 2004 America presidential election."
Discuss this letter on Voices '04

George Rolph (United Kingdom)
"Today, we are watching the race for the White House in America with baited breath. George Bush may not, arguably, have a clue when it comes to knowing how to deal with people in foreign countries, but he does know all about the family. He has been putting laws into place that are designed to strengthen the family and if he loses the next election and is removed from government, there is a very real danger that Kerry and his radical feminist "sistas" will have another 8 years to do yet more damage to our most cherished and loved institution... Please America, think hard before you vote."

Dear America by Mawala Kabanga (Republic of Congo)

Dear American people,

I hesitated first when I was allowed to give my opinion about America and the 2004 U.S. presidential election. But it's very important to me to write something due to the shared future of America and the world.

I've always dreamt to have such an opportunity. To speak personally to you is my great wish. I know that it will not produce significant effects because the American people don't show enough consideration to the opinion of others; they conclude that they are the world. That's why writing to you might be a waste of time. But it is specifically for this reason that I need to tell you something...
