George Soros -- An Immigrant Voter Speaks up Against Bush

"This is the most important election of my lifetime. I have never been heavily involved in partisan politics but these are not normal times. President Bush is endangering our safety, hurting our vital interests and undermining American values (...) I grew up in Hungary, lived through fascism and the Holocaust, and then had a foretaste of communism. I learned at an early age how important it is what kind of government prevails. I chose America as my home because I value freedom and democracy, civil liberties and an open society..."

Bush remains widely unpopular overseas as election nears

from The Union Leader and New Hampshire Sunday News - 29-Sep-04

PARIS - From Canada to Mexico, from London and Paris to Jakarta and Beijing, President Bush is widely unpopular as a candidate for re-election, according to surveys and interviews conducted in 20 countries.

Sen. John Kerry appears to be the runaway favorite abroad, even though few people outside the United States know much about the Massachusetts Democrat or his positions on foreign policy questions.

Wanted: an exta 20M US voters

The Globalist | Global Politics -- Wanted: An Extra 20 Million U.S. Voters

The United States has effectively lost its status as the world’s second-largest democracy. For the real measure of the size of a democracy, one looks at voter totals. First in line is India. Runner-up is Indonesia with 20 million voters more than the USA, depite having a population which is 55 million smaller.

Lack of Democracy Breeds Terror

215 Iranian intellectuals have signed an open letter to American intellectuals:

"The consequence of the Bush administration's Middle East policies has severely distorted the image of America in this region. Today's America is offering us interrogation instead of interaction, monologue instead of dialogue, arrogance instead of communication and techniques of torture instead of democracy."

"You've Got a Voice" German-American protest song

The song is "an appeal to all of us to raise our voices, to voice our criticisms, and above all to get out and vote. As part of the vote44 program against the politics of the Bush administration, the appeal is directed above all at Americans living abroad. In light of the recent elections in the states of Saxony and Brandenburg, however, where voter turnout in some places was under 50%, the song has relevance for Germany as well."

American Freedom v. the European Dream

This week, in the ninth exchange of the unique Letters to Americans series on www.openDemocracy.net, Petr Mach, Economic Advisor to President Vaclav Klaus of the Czech Republic, argues that sclerotic European governments are simply less democratic and less interested in freedom than the US government. From Washington, Jeremy Rifkin, President of the Foundation of Economic Trends, writes a passionate response. He praises what he calls a new "European dream" and says it delivers a far better quality of life.

Spanning the World for non-U.S., pro-Republican Voices

Americans for Bush, don’t believe the hype. The whole world is not against you. As the following letters from Voices '04 prove, you have several supporters outside of the U.S. who are counting on you to vote Republican! We’ll let them explain:

Andrew Lukaszewicz (Canada)
"I believe that Bush is the right person to lead the United States. He has demonstrated his ability to handle crises after 9/11. His domestic policies, such as banning late term abortions and trying to pass a law that would define marriage as the union between a man and a woman, have help to build a strong and moral society... Please make the right choice, and re-elect GWB. Although I am a Canadian, I am ashamed of my nation. I am an American at heart, and will soon live in this great land. God bless America!"
Discuss this letter on Voices '04

Andrew Dinham (Australia)
"Mr. Bush is a committed, hard-working president who has and is doing his darndest to rid the world of terrorists like Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein et.al. His decision to send troops to Iraq, was, unquestionably, a tough decision - but it was a tough decision made by a tough leader - a leader who was not willing to stand by and watch Saddam Hussein carry on his destruction any longer, a leader who instead of resorting to useless talk with a mindless dictator, sought to act and make the world a better place... So please, in summary, America, vote for President Bush. He is a strong leader, a leader willing to make a stand for the family unit and a leader willing to confront and deal with issues on the international front. God Bless America."
Discuss this letter on Voices '04

Joo Ik-Soon (South Korea)
"Though Bush has made some mistakes, he did many right things. For example, he brought America's economy up. Economy is the most important part, compared with others. I think a man who has experienced one time, will do the next time. Because he knows his faults, he will do carefully in politics next time... Of course, you must vote with your thinking. I hope you select the right person. Thank you."
Discuss this letter on Voices '04

Fredrico Santiago (Mexico)
"I want to let you know that not everyone hates Bush. I think Bush has done lots for your country, I think removing Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq was long overdue, it should have been done years ago. I am quite ashamed that my country has not helped you in Iraq. Mexico, the USA, and Canada are all north american countries and should help each other out in times of need. Hopefully relations between our countries were not hurt by Vicente Fox's decision not to help you. I hope you re-elect Bush in the 2004 America presidential election."
Discuss this letter on Voices '04

George Rolph (United Kingdom)
"Today, we are watching the race for the White House in America with baited breath. George Bush may not, arguably, have a clue when it comes to knowing how to deal with people in foreign countries, but he does know all about the family. He has been putting laws into place that are designed to strengthen the family and if he loses the next election and is removed from government, there is a very real danger that Kerry and his radical feminist "sistas" will have another 8 years to do yet more damage to our most cherished and loved institution... Please America, think hard before you vote."

American Support Waning in Poland

Letter From Poland

From The Nation

Western visitors here have often been surprised by Poland's avid pro-Americanism. For some it's a pleasant surprise: They find none of the anti-American stereotypes common elsewhere in Europe. For others it's an unpleasant one: What about the victims of America's imperial power?

Until now. George W. Bush has managed to do what forty-five years of Communist rule could not: puncture the image of essential American goodness that has always been the United States' key selling point.

Still no votes in Leipzig

Jonathan Freedland in The Guardian, Sept 22

"US policy now affects every citizen on the planet. So we should all have a say in who gets to the White House... Will this modest proposal fly? Will it hell. Despite Bush's smooth talk in New York yesterday, his position remains that America does not need a "permission slip" from anybody to do anything."

Is America's worst enemy nationalism?

America right or wrong

The Bush administration responded to 9/11 by exploiting a force deeply rooted in the United States: American nationalism. This force, says British writer Anatol Lieven in an extract from his new book America Right or Wrong, is now deforming the country’s relationship with the world and damaging America itself.

Viva Bush or Unidos con Kerry

NPR - Winning the Latino Vote

An unprecedented amount of dollars is being spent on television and radio campaign ads in Spanish. Most of the Latino viewers and listeners are not US citizens and cannot vote - but 7 million of them can - and both Bush and Kerry are reaching out to them in pigeon Spanish. Si, señor. "Nuestro pais, nuestro presidente". Any of you real Spanish speakers out there have anything to add?

You can listen to Bush and Kerry speaking Spanish right here. It almost hurts.

Bush's latest latin videos.
Kerry's latest latin videos.

Earth to America by Peter Merry (The Netherlands)

Dear America,

One of the most worrying things I see in Europe at the moment is the anti-American sentiment - not only for the negative energy which it creates but for the way it allows us off the hook in terms of taking responsibility ourselves for our own actions and politics.

We need America in its authentic freedom and wholeness, to help us through the coming storms. I just hope that all those who really sense the role America could play for the good of the whole get out to vote for the candidate they think can best deliver that.

Much hope but little expectation for Kerry

From the UK Guardian Unlimited, Sept 7, 2004.

An informal poll of Guardian Unlimited users shows huge support for the Democratic presidential nominee, John Kerry, but considerable pessimism over his chances of entering the White House in November's election.

With George Bush riding high in the opinion polls after last week's Republican national convention in New York, a growing uncertainty over the Kerry campaign is reflected in our self-selecting internet survey, with nearly 40% of users conceding that Mr Bush's end-of-convention speech was likely to bring wavering voters out in support of the Republicans.

Dear America by Mawala Kabanga (Republic of Congo)

Dear American people,

I hesitated first when I was allowed to give my opinion about America and the 2004 U.S. presidential election. But it's very important to me to write something due to the shared future of America and the world.

I've always dreamt to have such an opportunity. To speak personally to you is my great wish. I know that it will not produce significant effects because the American people don't show enough consideration to the opinion of others; they conclude that they are the world. That's why writing to you might be a waste of time. But it is specifically for this reason that I need to tell you something...

Sandy Starr on Spiked-Online.com, 1. Sept, 2004

Is the United States’s love affair with human rights over? In the seventh of openDemocracy's Letters to Americans series, the Iranian lawyer and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi writes a heartfelt letter to Eleanor Roosevelt, pioneer of American humanitarianism and commitment to the United Nations.

Ebadi writes: Mrs. Roosevelt, I’m happy that you’re no longer here. Given the great hope you had for a better world, to see the world in the state it finds itself in today would be very painful.

“The World Speaks” – “Die Welt spricht” – ist eine Arbeitsgemeinschaft von “Talk to US”, “Voices ‘04” und “My America: Letters to Americans” – einem Projekt von “openDemocracy.net”.

Besuchen Sie uns bald wieder!

The World Votes

The World Votes is the first global e-democracy experiment. Theworldvotes draws on global e-voting and e-democracy expertise in order to provide citizens around the world with a voice in the U.S. Election. The idea is to hold a mock election via the Internet at individual discretion, giving everyone around the world with access to the Internet the chance to cast a vote. Bush or Kerry? Voters choose the candidate they think is best for the world, giving reasons for their choice. The final outcome of the global vote for the U.S. President will be published on November 2, 2004. During the election campaign, intermediate polls will be published as well allowing U.S. citizens to take world opinion into account when making their own decision. This is what theworldvotes.org seeks to be: a community for the world's citizenry to let present and future presidents know what they expect of the world's most powerful state. Founding Web Sites

Election 2004: "The World Speaks" was founded by five online projects.

My America: Letters to America
http://www.opendemocracy.net/debates/issue-3-115.jsp
My America: Letters to America is a site that brings together a number of high profile Americans and non-Americans. It was launched in August 2004 by openDemocracy.

Talk to US
http://www.talktous.org
Talk to US addresses a critical problem: US policies impact the whole world, but non-Americans have few ways to communicate directly with mainstream America. The international voices Americans do hear often represent only the extremes -- not ordinary people from around the world. Talk to US is changing this by gathering and distributing 30 second video messages from people around the world.

The World Votes
http://www.theworldvotes.org
Theworldvotes.org gives people all around the world a voice in the forthcoming U.S. Presidential Election. The World Votes was launched in July 2003. Ensure that your voice is heard by casting your vote electronically and add momentum to a worldwide drive to establish global democracy.

Voices '04
http://www.voices04.org
Voices '04 exists in order to foster a dialogue between U.S. voters and non-U.S. citizens in advance of the 2004 presidential election. Visitors will find a collection of Dear America and Dear World letters as well as interviews and news articles about world opinion, the presidential candidates, and the U.S. electoral process.

Earth to America
www.EarthtoAmerica.org will bring the faces and voices of the world to the eyes and ears of US voters before the 2004 elections by inviting a network of over 2,000 organisations in more than 160 countries to send messages via the Earth to America site.

New Internet Gateway Gets Americans and Non-Americans Talking About the US Election

For Immediate Release
Sept 8, 2004

‘The World Speaks’ Launches as a Collaboration between Five International Websites

THE HAGUE, LONDON, NEW YORK, SEATTLE, STOCKHOLM and TORONTO —The World Speaks (www.theworldspeaks.net) launched today, creating a global online gateway that facilitates a multimedia dialogue between Americans and non-Americans in advance of the US presidential election.

Through www.theworldspeaks.net, the 700 million people connected to the Internet on every continent have the opportunity to talk, write and send video messages to Americans about their hopes and concerns for the most anticipated and important US election in recent history. And Americans are responding!

With only two months to go before Election Day, www.theworldspeaks.net lifts the quality of debate while bringing the discussion down to an intimate and personal level. No press secretaries, no ministry spokespersons, just real people with real concerns. Whether non-Americans support Bush or Kerry, they want US voters to think about the world before they drop the ballot. And recent polls clearly show that Americans care what the world thinks, understanding that security at home starts with being respected internationally.

The World Speaks is a spontaneous collaboration between five international websites based in Canada, The Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and the USA. Together, they have a collective audience that runs up in the hundreds of thousands, and through media partnerships and syndication, millions.

The five groups are:

openDemocracy.net - My America: Letters to Americans
www.openDemocracy.net is a website for debate about global politics and culture. Leading up to the US election openDemocracy is publishing a weekly exchange of letters in which Americans and non-Americans share their thoughts and feelings about the world’s lone superpower. My America: Letters to Americans delivers a wide range of fresh, provocative and stimulating exchanges as politicians, writers, and artists with differing viewpoints describe what America means to them. Letters exchanges so far have included: Chinese human rights activist, Wei Jingsheng and Anne-Marie Slaughter of Princeton University; British economist Will Hutton and Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform; Indian editor Antara Dev Sen and Dinesh D’Souza, writer of What’s So Great About America. This project is an example of what openDemocracy.net does best, assisting hard thought about global issues through strong argument and counter-argument.

Solana Larsen from www.openDemocracy.net says: “Without dialogue there is no understanding. And the world needs to understand America’s decision, regardless of who is elected. World peace depends on it. Of course, if foreigners can help sway America’s decision: great. The United States isn’t alone on the planet.”

Talk to US
“Pretend your camera leads straight into the living rooms of all 300 million Americans, and then answer the question: "What would you like to say to the people of the United States?" Talk to US is a global forum created to broadcast the ideas, concerns, or stories of people around the world to ordinary US citizens through short video clips. World citizens record their opinions, and submit them to www.talktoUS.org The video clips, captured by professional filmmakers, as well as by anyone with a video camera and the desire to express themselves, already feature people from more than 15 countries and turn global issues from impersonal statistics into personal stories. It is these stories that have the power to open hearts and minds, raise important questions and create connections across borders. Some of the partners in this project include: Americans for Informed Democracy, American Voices Abroad, Global Exchange, Link TV, Mercy Corps, National Alliance for Media Artc and Culture, OneWorld TV and YMDI/Media Rights.

Kajsa Klein from www.talktoUS.org says: “There is a tremendous desire around the world to communicate with the American people. The biggest hope for keeping the United States mindful of international public opinion, are the estimated 700 million people connected to the Internet.”

Voices '04
www.Voices04.org combines the personal quality of letter-writing with the massive scale of global and instantaneous electronic communication. Launched exactly one year in advance of the 2004 U.S. presidential election, the project invites all non-U.S. citizens to submit Dear America letters and all U.S. voters to contribute statements to the world. The result is a much needed exchange of ideas among those who can vote on November 2nd and those who cannot. Authors of Voices ‘04 letters can write on any number of topics: including specific foreign policy issues, the Republican, Democratic, and Third Party candidates, the electoral process, or the current state of America-World relations. To date, the site has received letters from world citizens based in the U.K., France, Austria, Germany, Russia, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, The Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Australia, China, Haiti, Mexico, Canada and the United States. Voices ‘04 is supported in part by the University of Toronto’s McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology.

Peter Deitz from www.Voices04.org says: “The online projects we link to on www.theworldspeaks.net enable world citizens to talk with one another - not as governments to governments across borders – but as people to people.”

The World Votes
Theworldvotes.org is the first global e-democracy experiment and provides citizens around the world with a voice in the US election. This is what theworldvotes.org seeks to be: a community for the world’s citizenry to let present and future presidents know what they expect of the world’s most powerful state. Theworldsvotes.org gives everybody a chance to be counted.

Wiebe de Jager from Theworldvotes.org says: "The foreign policy of the next president is of direct concern to citizens around the world. What was missing was a way for citizens around the world to express themselves and be counted."

Earth to America
www.EarthtoAmerica.org will bring the faces and voices of the world to the eyes and ears of US voters before the 2004 elections. Our goal is for Americans to hear directly from people worldwide about how the outcome of the 2004 US election—and the policies that will follow—will directly affect their lives. Earth to America will contact over 2,000 organizations in more than 160 countries that are Partners in the EarthAction Network, and invite them, and their millions of members, to send messages from the Earth to America site.

Lois Barber from www.EarthtoAmerica.org says: “By increasing US voters’ awareness and understanding of America’s interconnectedness to the rest of the world, we believe more Americans will be motivated to vote for a candidate who will work to create a more just, peaceful and equitable world.”

Voices '04

Voices '04 combina la personale qualita` della lettera con la dimensione globale` e l’instantaneita` della comunicazione elettronica. Talk to US

My America: Letters to Americans
